An interview with Caernarfon Town's new manager
IT'S BEEN A HECTIC FEW DAYS SINCE YOUR APPOINTMENT?
DR: That's correct. We were appointed to the post on Friday and the last few days have been pretty hectic arranging training and speaking to players that were already at the club and potential new signings.
HOW ARE NEGOTIATIONS GOING WITH POTENTIAL NEW SIGNINGS?
DR: We hope to have most of last season's squad tied up very soon. The only player looking likely to leave is Layton Maxwell who is poised to join Porthmadog. We are in talks with a number of Merseyside-based players and hopefully some of them will be putting pen to paper soon.
WHEN DOES PRE-SEASON TRAINING COMMENCE:
DR: We are kicking it all off on Saturday. For the first couple of weeks we will train in Runcorn basically because the Welsh-based players are on holiday. When they return we will alternate training between Wrexham and Runcorn. To start with we will be doing three sessions a week.
IS THE WPL A TRIP INTO THE UNKNOWN FOR YOU?
DR: Not really. Although I've never played or coached in the league I have kept a very close eye on it because friends I have played for the likes of TNS and Rhyl. The West Cheshire League has always being a league where the WPL clubs have cherry-picked players so I know a bit about the set up and the structure. Plus the North is close to Merseyside so it's very near to pop down and see what's going on.
Basically I'd say to be successful in this league you just need a solid base right through the team to build a platform on.
DID YOU KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE PRESENT SQUAD?
DR: I was aware of the Doran brothers from their time with Preston and the Jones twins from their time playing in Liverpool. We're hopeful with what we've got and with a few additions we'll do ok.
WHAT'S YOUR HOPES FOR THE SEASON?
DR: Obviously the aim is to finish as high up the table as we can. The transfer window is obviously a problem we have to deal with so it's important that we have a strong enough squad to be able to combat injuries and suspensions. We will make it clear that we want to get the ball down and play football. We'll be doing everything as professionally as we can. One thing we are definitely needing to address is the terrible disciplinary record that hampered the club last season. On the whole where just really looking forward to getting up and running. It's very important we get off to a good start to the season.
