Danish Coach Talks Exclusively to the North Wales Chronicle
DANISH coach Glen Riddersholm – speaking exclusively to the Chronicle at Farrar Road – was complimentary about Bangor City, ahead of the UEFA Cup special attraction later this month.
"Bangor have some good players and our team will be told they must be at their best to get the right result", said the FC Midjtylland representative, who was on a flying visit to North Wales.
Riddersholm said: "As full-timers, we regard ourselves as the favourites to win the tie and the odds are probably 70-30 in our favour".
City will host the first of their two Danish dates next Thursday, July 17, when the qualifying round first leg game is staged at Wrexham's Racecourse ground, followed by the away return on July 31.
Riddersholm sat in the Farrar Road grandstand, equipped with a laptop, as Bangor began their build-up with a friendly game against – but were beaten 5-1 by – fellow European adventurers, The New Saints.
It was the first real work-out for Nev Powell's squad after the summer break and City's boss involved 20 players during the 90 minutes' exchanges with Andy Cave's full time pros, who took runners-up spot in the Welsh Premier last season.
The Danish coach recognised the circumstances: "As this is Bangor's first outing, I am not concerned about the standard of the play or the result – they don't matter.
"It will be very different when we meet competitively and we will treat Bangor with every respect, because we have a job to do".
The Danish League title runners-up, from a town called Herning – about 150 miles from Copenhagen – normally appear in front of crowds of 10,000 to 15,000 and have a couple of international players in their ranks. They were formed in 1999 by a merger of Fremad Herning and Ikast FS
Like City, Midjtylland are just resuming after the summer break and their new season will kick-off on July 20, with a top clash against the champions, AaB Aalborg. In the meantime, they will travel to Germany for a couple of friendlies against top quality opposition.
Significant transfers have taken place during the off-season, with the Danish club selling both their centre-backs to Italian clubs, one for £3million and the other for half-a-million, and swooping for one replacement.
Riddersholm spent a couple of days on his spying mission, and - as well as checking out Powell's squad in action - looked at hotels for his club's North Wales visit and offered City advice about where they could stay, when they jet out to Denmark.
NOTE: The Danes won both of their friendlies in Germany. They beat Rot-Weiss Erfurt of the newly-created 3rd Bundesliga by three goals to one and won 1-0 against Bundesliga opposition in Energie Cottbus,
